Was in diesem Fall beim Wort genommen werden will…

The harvest is done! However, this does not mean the end of our RadioGarden season. Rather, the fruit stored in the cellars strives to get a new life – literally…

For some years now the sound and radio artists Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann are living and working in a small village in Mosel valley. For winemaking has a big tradition in this area (in fact up till today some of the best German white wines are coming from this very region) the both have gained some expertise in the art of winemaking as well. What about bringing both arts together, looking for unexpected synergies and syntaesthesias?
What is the sound of wine?

"The Long Night of the Yeast" is a piece exploring this question – by eavesdropping into the process of fermentation and listening to the vivid growth of yeast:

"Every autumn thousands of wine cellars in the Mosel valley, Germany’s premier wine growing region, turn into magnificent sound installations. Freshly pressed grape juice starts fermenting in barrels and the escaping gas bubbles through glass u-pipes, each barrel at its own speed. Mobile Radio has set up a stereo microphone in the wine cellar of bio-dynamic winemakers Rudolf & Rita Trossen in the village of Kinheim to capture and broadcast these fermentation sounds from 8pm to 8am CET, starting on Monday 4th November, documenting the work of yeast turning juice into wine." [S.W./K.A.]

The original 12 hrs live stream broadcast has been cut and edited to an hour of rich acoustic presence.

is a special guest artist contribution by Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann to the RadioGarden 2013.
