"I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is destroyed […]"

"I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of rhythm, is destroyed […]"
This is the beginning of a piece that today is probably one of the most prominent works of sound and radio art: "I am sitting in a room" by Alvin Lucier.

Since its first recording in 1969 in the Electronic Music Studio at Brandeis University, Walham/Massachusetts, it has been performed and recorded many times – not only by the 1931-born US-American composer, musician and artist himself.

His invitation to perform the piece in other rooms (and, if necessary, also with another text) has been followed up till today by many artists.

Among the latter are Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann with their Mobile Radio project, who stumbled in 2012 in Berlin upon a room that inspired them to perform a radio version of Alvin Lucier's "I am sitting in a room"…

credits:
miss.gunst wishes to thank Sarah Washington and Knut Aufermann aka Mobile Radio for the show as well as for the great performance of Alvin Lucier's piece – and most notably of course Alvin Lucier for his outstanding work.
