but then it's not about mimesis, but about experience.

first with a sound fugue by annie dunsford focusing on a very special experience. the experience of of alienation:

"What is the relationship between identity and sound? In sound, can we discover/ invent/ lose our selves? How does art make us feel when we experience it and create it? –does it disassociate us from ourselves, does it localize us, does it allow us to recover/rediscover our selves ? Do we feel nothing? Do we feel alienated from the art itself? Is experiencing art and sound an experience of alienation or discovery? After the experience of art, are we unchanged?
The intention of Suono Fuga is to both alienate the listener from themselves and from the sound, then return them to it. The sonic adventure is thus an adventure of departure and a return, a loss of self and a rediscovery of self through sound." [A.D.]

starting with a brass bell. two minutes transformed into sheer eternity:

"[...] 'the sound of a brass bell tuned to the pitch D, but with an overtone of D-sharp, struck nine times at a brisk tempo, with the final tone allowed to ring until the sound decays naturally. The rhythmic pattern is eight 16th notes and a quarter note; the total duration, from the striking of the first tone to the end of the decay on the final one, is just over 3 seconds.' Taking it’s cues from the long-duration film of the same name, this work takes a 2 second audiomark registered by the New York Stock Exchange and slows it drastically to 28 minutes. The opening bell and energetic trader shouts are brought to a standstill and become instead a dirge of white noise and ringing drones which replace motivation with malaise." [L.M.]

"Jacob van Eyck was a remarkable composer of the florishing early baroque period in the Netherlands: born blind, of noble family, educated in music, he turned into a renowned organist, recorder-player, composer and carilloneur. He was famous for his ability to tune bells and carillons. Pia Palme, composing and playing modern recorders, uses contemporary means for her homage to her famous predecessor. A subbass-recorder without its headpiece is used to create sound by means of finely balanced inner microfones and feedback-techniques; sounds which remind of bells, including very deep basses. For the composition Palme plays and processes themes from Eyck's recorder-pieces by means of electronics.
Texts by John Milton (1608 – 1674), who turned blind in the course of his life, add another dimension. The title is a quotation from Milton's poem: "On his Blindness", describing the author's willingness to just stand and wait instead of acting." [G.M/P.P.]

Not that i wanted to discuss the relevance/rightness of an apocalyptic preach, but something in that speech had to be pursued.
That led me to associate the vehemence of the first part with a second one more breathing and rather speechless. Now, that breath of air could either sketch an interpretation of the Noah's journey on his arch (mentioned by the preacher), or be a response to the alarmists passion, or be a free space of no-response needed." "Ambient Drone" meint das Label. Ja, das meinen wir auch.

Um gleich bei den schönen Schleifen zu bleiben: Bei Resting Bell, seit Jahren schon mit festem Eintrag unter unseren Lieblingslabels residierend, sind gerade drei EPs des japanischen Musikers Koji Saito herausgekommen, die wir LiebhaberInnen dieses Genres eigentlich alle gleichermassen gern ans Herz bzw. geneigte Ohr legen wollen. Schon sein erstes Release auf Resting Bell, "Time/Line" war/ist einfach grossartig. Also eigentlich: alle und alles, hier einfach nur exemplarisch "Music" – mit, und da kann man wirklich wieder der treffenden Beschreibung des Labels folgen, einem Klangkokon, in die man sich einhüllen (lassen) und wunderbar den Winter verbringen kann.

Ausserdem hatte Resting Bell in diesem Herbst ein Jubiläum zu feiern, insofern die Hunderter-Marke der Publikationen überschritten wurde. Was bei den angelegten Qualitätsstandards, der Konsequenz in der ästhetischen Wahl und überhaupt ganz sicher ein guter Grund zur Gratulation ist. Und zudem rechtfertigt, dass gleich noch eine zweite Glocke auf dieser Liste erscheint. Wobei Oskar Hallberts "Promenader & Utflykter" auch deshalb aus der Triade der Jubiläumspublikationen herausgepickt wird, weil wir seine Arbeit mit Field Recordings so mögen.

FACTORY MUSIC

Natürlich auch nicht die einzige leckere Veröffentlichung des gerade mal zwei Jahre jungen, ebenso rührigen wie grundsympathischen Moskauer Netzlabel. Aber diese dürfen sich FreundInnen experimentellen Minimalismus sich auf gar keinen Fall entgehen lassen. Hush liefert zwei Tracks, die es wirklich in sich haben. Zu denen es dann noch eine Portion Remixes von Freunden gibt. Wobei man nicht nur daran merkt, dass Hush einen Hintergrund als DJ hat. Dieser Sound kann lässig auch grosse Räume füllen.

Ein überzeugender Beleg, dass viele Köche gemeinsam ganz phantastische Delikatessen fabrizieren können. In diesem Fall hat sich das von uns sowieso sehr geschätzte Kollektiv von Insubordinations mit Tskuku Tsuku Grammofon zusammengetan – der Netzlabel Abteilung einer ebenfalls frankophonen Tonträgerveröffentlichungsinitiative für Electronica (die, wie wir gern gestehen, uns auf diese Weise überhaupt erst in den Radar gegangen ist. Oho, das wurde ja wirklich Zeit!). Auch wenn der Titel behauptet, dass die Tiden unterschiedlich hoch sind: Wirklich Ebbe wird da nie.

Wo wir gerade bei Schweizer Netzlabel-Lieblingen sind, darf natürlich auch interdisco nicht fehlen. Sind nämlich wieder aktiv und werden es hoffentlich auch weiter bleiben.
Unser diesjähriges Liebings-Release bei interdisco ist unangefochten das von Adam Thomas aka Preslav Literary School – der aus Fundstücken der Kassetten-Ära wunderbare Experimenralelektronik zaubert und damit angewandte Medienarchäologie betreibt, die sich eins ums andere Mal mit dem Prädikat "best practice" auszeichnen lässt.

BUTTERFLY FLAPPING STRING THEORY

Wie schade: Jason Kavanagh hat sich leider entschlossen, den Veröffentlichungsbetrieb von ItsuJitsu nach gerade mal zwei Jahren wieder einzustellen. Wie gut: dass rechtzeitig vorher noch diese EP mit improvisierten Klanglandschaften von Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt herausgekommen ist. Empfehlung darüber hinaus: auch weiteren Releases des (Ex-)Netlabels ein Öhrchen zu schenken. Oder darf bzw. will man sich etwa eine Publikation entgehen lassen, die den schönen Titel trägt "gerhard richter generational gravitation / the idiot foot soldier you laugh at today will be pissing on the floor of your parliament tomorrow"? Nicht nur, weil da – zusammen mit Elizabeth Veldon – ebenfalls Sean Derrick Cooper Marquardt seine Finger im Spiel hatte: das kann nur eine rhetorische Frage sein.

Auch schon lang in der Kategorie Lieblingslabels. Zwar hat das Pfeffermühlchen auf seiner Seite gerade Baustellenzeit ausgerufen. Aber zuvor bzw. zum Trost noch eine neue Kompilation ins Netz gestellt. Für die – ungeachtet ihres Titels (den wir mal als Beitrag zur Verhinderung des gemeinhin zu beobachtenden und durchaus Besorgnis erregenden mählichen Aussterbens arbeitsfreier Tage verstehen wollen) – zwölf Beitragende ganze Arbeit geleistet haben. Die ihrerseits wiederum so grosses Vergnügen bereitet, dass wir doch mal hoffen wollen, dass auch die Pfeffermühlchen-Betreiber fleissig am Relaunch ihrer Heimseite arbeiten.

Womit wir dann schon beim Bonus-Track wären. Dragan Espenschieds Bildungsprogramm für Newbies in Sachen muntere Musikproduktion auf dem Heimcomputer ist zwar schon im vergangenen Dezember erschienen. Aber einmal ganz abgesehen davon, dass es Netzlabel-Lieblingsliste ohne 8bit-Musik geben darf (und an anderen einschlägigen Adressen eh alle selber regelmässig vorbeischauen): Nachdem UPITUP schon vor Jahren mal (übers seinerseits äussert liebenswerte Lab30-Festival) auf unserer LLListe gelandet ist, müssen wir einfach mal wieder eine Publikation der Italiener dabei haben. Und eben, a propos müssen, diese hier ist einfach schon aus Bildungsgründen ein Muss. Im Sinne von: Unausweichlich, weil sonst wirklich was verpasst. Wer will schon mit Bildungslücken durchs Leben schreiten?

"On July 23rd, 2011 CKUT’s Magic Sound Mountain Collective made a furtive ascent of Mount Royal and found a spot along one of the less trodden foot paths through the forest where they installed 6 hand made speakers that were used to diffuse multi channel sound compositions for the forest dwellers, invited guests and nature enthusiasts who happen upon the installation while enjoying a hike through the mountain." "[...] The Paiva is a mountain river with a rocky bed (granite and slate stone) that can either show its rebellious side (strong currents associated with the seasonal variations of its torrent and with the narrowness and unevenness of its bed in several areas), or gently slide through terraces of agricultural fields, crossing small rural riverside villages that live in close connection with it.
The narrative revolves around the uncertainties that exist about the exact spot where the river starts. You can listen a villager pinpointing the exact locations where different small streams gather to form the river, others discuss different theories and don't reach any positive conclusion and one lady asserts that the river begins in two different locations: one of them being an hermitage on top of a mountain, the Senhora da Lapa, where people gather in pilgrimage once a year. Other themes are also present: the agricultural use of riverside lands, the names of particular 'poços' or depressions where people claim 'the river is bottomless', the locations of the watermills where people used to grind corn and the places where fish was or still is abundant." in september 2011, members from of TIME INVENTORS’ KABINET (TIK) met in bratislava for another week of collective research on radio as a tool for investigating alternate traces of time:

this time, we went with the wind. literally. for not only our research was guided by the wind, but also our radio transmissions.

the week started with the opening of the exhibition ‘vietor a cas’ (‘wind and time’) in ASIL gallery, Bratislava – directly connected to the radio art week not only because the works presented were about wind, time, sound, and transmission.
among the latter were also two installations of wind clocks built by barb huber, the underwear clock and the laundry clock – both moved by the door’s back draught generated by visitors entering and leaving the exhibition space.
together with other wind clocks built by members of the TIME INVENTORS’ KABINET, these temporary wind clocks were driving the wind time on which the whole TIK radio art week’s schedule was built upon. [...] WITH THE WIND is based on two pieces broadcasted during our third transmission on wind day 12, 09:00:00 – SPACE IN BETWEEN, a sound walk reflection by martina kedrova, and DOUBLE FROZEN WIND KABINET, the transformation of a transformation of a live piece by norbert math.

iin march 2011, members from of TIME INVENTORS' KABINET (TIK) met in bratislava for a week of collective research on radio as a tool for investigating alternate traces of time.
we used a wide range of methods (a.o. city walks, field recordings, investigations in individual as well as collective imaginations, deliberate data dreaming) to explore topics like time bending, hazy time, wind time, lichen clocks, ecotime zones, shortcuts – the latter to become the focus topic for our radio show.
based on our observations and findings we developed, performed and broadcast a live radio show on friday, march 18, 2011, as part of the research week's public closing event at hacklab progressbar.

Aber natürlich treibt uns die Neugier dann doch vor die Tür: "Zuhause" heisst nämlich eine Ausstellung, die aktuell im Museum für Moderne Kunst eingerichtet worden ist.
Entstanden ist sie ganz nach dem DIY-Motto: "Selbermachen – Mitmachen – Zusammenmachen": SchülerInnen der Frankfurter Ludwig-Börne-Schule haben im Rahmen des Kunstvermittlungsprojekts "SHOW UP! 2011!" das Ausstellungsthema bestimmt, dazu Werke aus der Sammung des MMK ausgewählt, die Ausstellung geplant und eingerichtet – und schliesslich auch ein passendes Vermittlungskonzept entwickelt.

Vier der AusstellungsmacherInnen – Marc Schmetz, Florian Kirchner, Allesandro Calvente und Kübra Yurdakul – sind bei GUNST im Studio zu Gast, um uns von "Zuhause" zu erzählen. Ebenfalls mit von der Partie ist die Kunstvermittlerin und MuseumsKatharina Mantel, die das Projekt am MMK initiiert und geleitet hat.

Und natürlich gibt es wie immer auch passende Musik…

Home Sweet Home! A perfect place to stay – not only for Do It Yourself enthusiast. Take a look at the rainy, cold winter day – Why not spend a cozy afternoon and evening at home?
However, from time to time one has to leave to come home again – or to find another one. Like today: For "At Home" is elsewhere, in Frankfurt's Museum for Modern Art.
Plus, the exhibition "At Home" ("Zuhause") is self-made as well: Conceived and curated by students of Frankfurt's Ludwig-Börne school.

Four of the young curators – Marc Schmetz, Florian Kirchner, Allesandro Calvente und Kübra Yurdakul – and the art educator Katharina Mantel, who has initiated and directed the project, are our studio guests.

zunächst in turin, wo graham hudson als gastkünstler des progetto diogene in begleitung des schriftstells und musikers luca morino und fabrizio diciotti von GAT (gruppo archeologico torinese) einen klangspaziergang durch den quadrilatero romano – das älteste stadtviertel – unternehmen.
im anschluss machen wir uns dann in mailand zusammen mit painè cuadrelli auf den weg.

first in turino, where graham hudson – currently at place as a guest artist invited by progetto diogene – takes us out for an archeological sound walk:

"Sondaggio:Torino is a soundwalk, a peculiar city tour of the most ancient part of Turin (the Quadrilatero Romano) guided by Graham Hudson. In this walk the artist was accompanied by Luca Morino (writer and musician) and Fabrizio Diciotti of the Torino Archeology Group.
The aim was to produce an audiowalk that would include words and speculations about the historical and contemporary Torino. The resulting tour takes the listener from the Quadrilatero Romano, a recognised symbol of Turin’s mythology to the Progetto Diogene Tram – a symbol of transitory architecture.
Along the way Graham Hudson’s talks about his work, his interventions on the architectural space of Torino, and his evolving sculptures provide fleeting landmarks that play between these concepts." [GH/RP]
