Do-It-Yourself (or simply: DIY or D.I.Y) – encompassing a whole variety of practices and projects, attitudes and strategies associated with tags as "home made", "hand made", "bricolage", "craft" and (more recently) "hacking" – is currently facing a boom. HOME MADE ELECTRONIC ARTS wants to show the creative output of DIY among artists who swapped canvas, paint and brushes with soldreing irons and circuit boards. In their studios, instead of paintings we'll find roboter insects, hacked plush toys, one-pixel-cameras and piano t-shirts to wear and play.
The Zurich based collective !Mediengruppe bitnik – (in)famous for smuggling bugs into the opera house – constructs a simple pirate tv; Olaf Val from Kassel presents us a kit for a DIY playstation; Niklas Roy a.k.a. "Cyberniklas" builds a.o. a noise organ; Basel based sound artist and composer Niki Neecke hacks old plushies and artist-engineer Daniel Imboden from Emmenbrücke transforms buzzers from old mobiles into dancing micro-robots; Ralf Schreiber and the collective derstrudel present their lunimous overhead bots.
The book is conceived for a broader public rangig from interested lay people to real nerds. HOME MADE ELECTRONIC ARTS is not only a collection of studio visits. Most of the projects introduced are easy to build and a good inspiration for your own creative development.
In addition to portraits of the projects and their creators – artists, designers and engineers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland – the volume contains thematic essays by the editors, a glossary and of course many illustrations in color.
