Wie wild das Grün auch wuchern mag: Sein Wachstum folgt Regeln, Mass und Zahl. Bei einem Spaziergang im DatenGarten erfahren wir mehr von der algorithmischen Schönheit der Pflanzen. Biologie trifft Mathematik, Informatik trifft Kunst.

Die mathematische Theorie biologischer Entwicklung, die der theoretische Biologe Aristid Lindenmayer in seinen L-Systemen operationalisiert hat, führt uns zur computergrafischen Modellierung des Pflanzenwachstums. Mit dem 1990 erschienenen Buch "The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants" von Lindenmayer (posthum) und Przemyslaw Prusinkiewicz sowie weiteren Forschungen aus dem Feld der "Algorithmischen Botanik" im Gepäck reisen wir in unserer Rauumzeitmaschine zur ars electronica 1993, die dem Komplex "Genetische Kunst – Künstliches Leben" gewidmet ist.

Zwei der dort ausgestellten Arbeiten schauen wir uns genauer an. Zunächst "Interactive Plant Growing" von Christa Sommerer und Laurent Mignonneau. In der interaktiven Installation sind lebende Pflanzen das Interface, über das sich ein künstlicher Garten auf der Leinwand pflanzen und wieder zerstören lässt.

Im Anschluss machen wir einen philosophischen Spaziergang durch Ross Harleys "Digital Garden" – dessen Pflanzungen uns noch einmal auf die L-Systeme zurückführen. Und damit auf die eingangs gestellte und durchgängig mitgeführte Frage danach, wie Regel, Mass und Zahl im DatenGarten funktionieren.

Dieser Komplex interessiert uns nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil "The Rules" das Leitmotiv der "NODE 2013", die aktuell im Frankfurter Kunstverein stattfindet. Das "NODE Forum for Digital Arts" widmet sich alle zwei Jahre dem kreativen Umgang mit VVVV, einer grafischen Entwicklungsumgebung zur Echtzeit-Steuerung von Video, Audio und Datenströmen – die wiederum gerade auch für jene interessant ist, die im Feld der Generativen Kunst, des Live Coding und der Software Art arbeiten.

Zwar gedeihen – anders als in den voraufgegangenen Jahren – in der Ausstellung, die Teil des Festivals ist, diesmal keine DatenGärten im engeren Sinne. Systematisch sowie über das Schwerpunkt-Thema "The Rules" lassen sich jedoch zahlreiche Anknüpfungspunkte finden.

Und schliesslich stellt auch die Musik, die im DatenGarten erklingt, unmittelbare Anschlüsse her: Die Klangpflanzen im DatenGarten wachsen ebenfalls nach den Gesetzen der Mathematik…

Wild grows the green. Yet following rules, measures, numbers. Taking a walk through the DataGarden we'll learn more about the algorithic beauty of plants. Biology meets mathematics, informatics meets art.

The mathetamatical theory of biologic evolution developed by Aristid Lindenmayer and operationalized in his L-systems guides us to the computer based graphic modelling of plant growth. With the "The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants", a book published by Lindenmayer (posthumously) and Przemyslaw Prusinkiewicz in 1990, and further research on "Algorithmic Botany" in our backpack we travel with our space-time-machine back to the ars electronica 1993, dedicated to the complex "Genetic Art – Artificial Life".

We'll then take a closer look at two of the pieces presented in the ars electronica's exhibition. The first one is "Interactive Plant Growing" by Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau. In this interactive installation living plants are the interface that allows us to grow (and subsequently also to destroy) an artificial garden.

Afterwards, we'll take a philosophical stroll through Ross Harley's "Digital Garden" – that will also allow us to come back to the L-systems. And to our initial question about rules, measures, number in relation to biological growth, the human desire to understand the mathetmatics of nature (and the nature of mathematics) as well as other ideas sown and seeded in the DataGarden.

One reason for this are the connnections we can draw to "The Rules" being the leitmotif of "NODE 2013". The biennial "NODE Forum for Digital Arts" is dedicated to creative work with VVVV, a graphic toolkit for real-time programming of video, audio and data streaming in general – onviously especially interesting for those concerned with generative arts, live coding and software art.

While – in contrast to prevoius issues – this year's NODE exhibition does not sport pieces directly leading us into generative plant growth, a more general approach as well as the main theme "The Rules" can offer several links.

Last but not least the music is fitting into this complex: the sound plants in our DataGarden are grown according to mathematic rules…
