"ad sanctos, apud ecclesiam. eine predigt zur kunst" ("ad sanctos, apud eccesiam. a sermon on art") was released in 2000 as a lecture/performance and later transformed into a hypertext format.
the subject of the sermon are the parallels between the perception (and production) of "the saint" and the perception (and production) of "the artist" in society.
The piece "ad sanctos, apud ecclesiam" goes back to the invitation to give a lecture in the context of the exhibition "viatico", curated by Christiana Protto/home abroad e.v. and running from november 3rd to november 7th, 2000, at the galerie a.k. in Frankfurt am Main. The exhibition itself was a collection of selected contributions that originally had been part of the project "viatico di critica e arte", shown at the CHANGE studio d'arte contemporanea / associazione culturale project room, Rome, during spring/summer 2000 (and curated by Roberto Annecchini, Patrizia Mania and Domenico Scudero).
Each evening during the running time of "viatico" was additionally enriched with lectures, performance pieces and video/film screenings provided by people participating in the exhibition. While my piece viatico (for children / per i bambini) [for more info pls. follow the link to see the related documentation, opening in a separate window of your browser], featuring the "third release" of my older piece wie man den kindern die kunst erklärt (for more info see the related documentation, opening in a separate window of your browser), was part of the exhibition, the lecture "ad sanctos, apud ecclesiam" might be seen as some kind of stand-by sermon continuing some of the related reflections raised within the piece wie man den kindern die kunst erklärt by embedding them in a more historical scope.
The text itself has been inspired by the corresponding chapter of Philippe Ariès' "Geschichte des Todes" (Munich, 3rd. ed. 1987).
