FUTURE ECOLOGIES

Research & Learning Lab

The term "ecology" captures the dynamic system of mutual relationships between living organisms and their environment. In the late anthropocene (also known as plantationocene and capitalocene) these relationships are deeply impregnated by the all encompassing and lasting influence of human actions and activities on the ecosystem of planet earth.

Both the status quo and (m)any prognoses for future developments based on the latter do not leave a lot of ground for the growth of positive perspectives. An accelerated climate change, natural ressources running dry, overused, contaminated and devastated habitats, an ongoing mass extinction: our present is dominated by dystopian scenarios for our ecosystem's future.

At the same time, and for the very same reasons, it seems even more urgent to develop alternative perspectives. What can art and design, together and in exchange with science and society, contribute to the latter? Can speculative concepts, creative practices, images and narratives, experimental assemblages and prototypes open up and nurture new agencies – now?
Questions like these are leading our research exploring future ecologies: future always starts with the present.
