"How does this work?" Workshopology of Critical Everything. Mediating Art and Everyday Culture, Media and Technologies

Research Workshop
Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, September 26, 2018

We understand creative practices such as Critical Making, Critical Engineering and Critical Crafting as fertile transdisciplinary agents for thinking and acting. They allow us to work together with experts and amateurs, beyond attributions such as art, media, technology and the framework(s) of established and institutionalized teaching and learning concepts and contexts. The sociopolitical impact of technologies and cultural techniques is reflected, knowledge is shared and practical skills are imparted not only by the way of joint doing, researching and learning, but also fueled by critical questioning and questioning of the respective practices.

But how can critical thinking with and about technical, artistic and everyday cultural artifacts be conceived by putting the practices associated with them into practice? How can these practices catalyze a creative, undisciplined transfer of knowledge that also allows us to deal with the sociopolitical challenges of our increasingly technological environment?

In our workshop, we want to deal with these and related questions together with experts who design workshops and related formats in a field open for different (inter-/trans-) disciplinary contexts. Our aim is to discuss – very concretely and in a peer group of people working in the mentioned field – which assumptions, prerequisites and resources determine and enable our actions as researchers, practitioners and creators/curators of workshops as mediating formats.
