Konferenz | Conference AI Artistry Unleashed. Image Generation and Creative Synthesis in the Era of Advanced Neural Networks, V-Cybercult | Iasi (Online), 01.11./02.11.2024, Nov 02, 2024 | 02.11.2024
Since early modernity, and over almost the whole twentieth century, avant-garde artists strove to break the rules of what in their respective times used to be considered as academic, widely accepted concept(s) of art. To do so quite a few would quit the race for technical mastership, abandon the myth of original ingeniousness, and embrace the powers of chance and combinatorics instead. Machine art and digital media would finally make the spaceship fly to until then unknown dimensions. That’s at least what we used to learn from our books on art history and avant-garde arts. But wait: is this already the whole truth?
It seems like there are meanwhile reasons to correct this perspective: AI artistry unleashed can teach us better indeed. Is it possible that not audacious rule-breaking and/or embracing chance principles in order to touch new ground are the most viable ways to contribute to our present and future avant-gardes, but that the most probable next step and the most probable solution to a problem can create the most convincing works of art?
Does even chance work better when being programmed as a calculated permutation?
Let us do the math and check the rules of art.
