Cow CompassesConcepts and Considerations In 2008, German researchers (Dr. Sabine Begall from the University of Duisburg-Essen, originally studying the influence of earth magnetism on African mole rats) reported that a significant percentage of cattle are to be found with their bodies directed along the North-South axis during sleep. Similar behavior has also been spotted in surveys focusing wild deer. Thus, one might give it a try when walking without a compass in clouded nights – and perhaps also use this additional orientation when trying to use the night sky as a clock. Moreover, for the very reason that – without having reliable alternative information – you will never be sure if the cattle you are spotting belong to the mentioned percentage, the usage of Cow Compasses seems to be fuzzy enough to become part of a distributed TBC mechanism, and more precisely those directly related to Hazy Time [see ibid.] [Thanks to Ralf Schreiber for mentioning the cow research during one of our TIK related talks!] Related Entries: |
