Es gärt. Es lebt. Genauer gesagt: Sie leben. In uns und mit uns. Und immer wieder auch für die Kunst: Mikroorganismen – wie zum Beispiel Hefe.

Hungriger Hefe im Bioreaktor werden Nährstoffe – im Wesentlichen Zucker, Glucose und Glycerin – kredenzt. Ihre Biosignale nehmen Sensoren ab, deren Messdaten ihrerseits für die Steuerung verschiedener Mechaniken eingesetzt werden. Beispielsweise solche, die das Licht regeln, Jalousien bewegen, Klang- und Filminstallationen aktivieren. Das Abspielen eines Films wird mit der Fütterung korreliert. Die Hefepilze merken sich die Zeitspanne, die von Zuckergabe zu Zuckergabe vergeht. Auf diese Weise, so sagt er, werden sie zu einer Uhr. Das System wächst und mit ihm seine eigene Zeit.

Aber nicht nur in Philippe Parrenos aktueller Ausstellung im Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin begegnen Hefepilze und andere Mikroorganismen als AkteurInnen der Kunst. Und auch in vielen Projekten, die sich an der Schnittstelle von DIYBio, BioHacking und Citizen Science bewegen, spielen sie derzeit eine zentrale Rolle. GUNSTradio sondiert das Feld auf seine Weise – mit den Mitteln der Mikrobiopoesie.

It is fermenting. It lives. Or, more precisely: they live. In us and with us. And, again and again, in the arts: microorganisms – such as yeast.

Hungry yeast in a bioreactor is fed with nutrients – mainly sugar, glucose and glycerol. Sensors are collecting the biodata – that are in turn processed to operate a whole range of technical systems: the ambient light, the movement of the venetian blinds, the playing of sound and film. Each play-back of a film correlates with the feeding of the yeast. The fungus remembers the time-span between feeding, feast and feeding. Thus, he states, the yeast becomes a clock. The system is growing, and with it the time.

Not only in Philippe Parreno's recent show at Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin we can find yeast and other micro-organisms becoming agents of art. Plus, they also play important roles in many projects situated at the intersections of DIY Bio, BioHacking and Citizen Science.
