Wo andere eine Brücke sehen, entdeckt der kanadische Percussionist Michael Gambacurta ein Autophon – ein selbstklingendes Instrument, welches als Ganzes schwingend Töne und Geräusche vielfältigster Art erzeugt…

Die Kaiserleibrücke über den Main zwischen Frankfurt und Offenbach, Autobahn A661. Sie bildet den Resonanzkörper für die Fahrgeräusche der unzähligen Autos und Lastwagen, die sie tagtäglich überrollen. Die Struktur der Kaiserleibrücke selbst kommt zum Klingen, moduliert durch Verkehr, Wind und Wetter. Ein unendliches Konzert, dessen Thema immer neue Variationen erfährt.

Michael Gambacurta hat den Klängen der Brücke gelauscht und einige Takte ihrer Musik entwendet, um gemeinsam mit dem Komponisten Matthias S. Krüger eine Konzert-Hommage zu entwickeln, die uns mit den Ohren der Brücke hören lässt: Autophones.

Autophones wurde ursprünglich als ortsbezogenes Radio-Kunst-Projekt für Frankfurt und Offenbach entwickelt. Vom 19. bis 21. September liess sich Autophones im Rahmen des Festival Junger Talente im Hafen Offenbach als Klang-Raum-Installation in einem Container vis-à-vis der Kaiserleibrücke erleben. Zeitgleich war Autophones über radio x auch im (Auto-)Radio zu hören – etwa auch dann, wenn man gerade selbst über die Kaiserleibrücke fuhr.

Zusätzlich wurde im Rahmen von GUNSTradio am 19. September 2008 ein einstündiges Autophones Radio-Konzert ausgestrahlt, das im Anschluss in einer nochmals ueberarbeiteten Fassung beim von der radia.fm Partnerstation Radio Zero organisierten Radiokunst-Festival RadiaLx (Lissabon, 22. bis 28. September 2008) zur Aufführung kam.

Basierend auf dieser Fassung wurde schliesslich AUTOPHONES (RLXTENDED) entwickelt.

AUTOPHONES (RLXTENDED) von Michael Giambacurta & Matthias S. Krüger ist eine GUNSTproduktion von radiator x für das internationale Kunstradio-Netwerk radia.fm
und wird in der Woche vom 20. bis 26. Oktober 2008 als radia #186 (saison 17) von den beteiligten Stationen des Netzwerks ausgestrahlt.

Where others see a bridge, the Canadian percussionist Michael Gambacurta discovered an autophone – a musical instrument whose own substance produces sound with a vibrant tone.

The Kaiserlei-Bridge over river Main between Frankfurt and Offenbach is the soundboard for countless vehicles crossing daily. A sounding structure, tuned by the traffic, wind and weather – an endless concert, endless variations of a theme.

Michael Gambacurta listened for a long time over the days, during the nights – and decided to steal some of the sounds. Together with the composer Matthias S. Krüger he created a Concert-Hommage that makes us hear with the ears of the brigde: Autophones.

Autophones was originally conceived as a site-specific radio art project for the cities of Frankfurt and Offenbach. From September 19 to September 21, 2008, Autophones was presented as an audiovisual installation in a container vis-à-vis Kaiserlei bridge in the framework of Festival Junger Talente at Hafen Offenbach.
During this period, Autophones was also broadcasted as (car) radio concert via rtadio x – thus also when cars were crossing the brigde.
On September 19, 2008 GUNSTradio (2pm to 3pm) invites to listen to a full hour of Autophones radio concert. A revised version was then broadcasted in the framework of RadiaLx Radio Art Festival (Lisbon, Sept 22nd till Sept 28th) organized by our radia.fm partner station Radio Zero.

AUTOPHONES (RLXTENDED) is based on this version.

Michael Giambacurta is a percussionist from Canada. Matthias S. Krüger is a composer from Germany. Both are currently based in Frankfurt am Main.
