Elementaruhren

General Remarks, Concepts and Considerations

The German term "Elementaruhr" could be literally translated to "elementary clock" or "element clock" – but in English language there is no such term with a related meaning  ("elementary" in English does not relate to the elements, but rather to something "basic", if not "simple", "rudimentary" etc., and "element clock" is not really being used within the taxonomy of time piece).

Now, what is an "Elementaruhr" – and what's so remarkable about this term to include it into this encyclopedia?

"Elementaruhren" are all clocks based on primary matter: on the elements (usually listed: fire, water, earth=sand) or on the celestial bodies (planets, stars) – Fire clocks, Water clocks, Hour Glasses, Astrolabes, Nocturnals, and Sundials.

Note: Wind clocks are usally not listed – but for obvious reasons they could be aptly coined as Elementaruhren.

A future supplement to this entry may contain further findings and references. Elementaruhren being eligible for becoming [TIME BENDING CLOCK mechanisms] or already being [TBC Mechanisms] will be or are already included into the TBC encyclopedia with separate entries.
