"panem@circenses" (kurz: p@c) beschäftigt sich mit den strukturen und funktionen des "betriebssystem kunst" (Th. Wulffen), der rolle, die diese in der gesellschaft spielen und ihren effekten auf die gesellschaftliche wahrnehmung von kunst. formal ist das projekt als informations- und lernplattform konzipiert. die grundlage liefern dabei begriffe, die aus dem römischen circus als einer einrichtung, die sowohl der volksbelustigung als auch als vehikel der politischen lenkung der "massen" bzw. des plebs diente.

ausgehend von diesen begriffen werden parallelen zu bestimmten bereichen des zeitgenössischen kunst- und kulturbetriebs gezogen. so steht z.b. die "arena" für die kunstszene, die "spectacula" finden ihre parallele in den "ausstellungen und events", das "publicum" ist das "publikum" usw.

"panem@circenses" (or in short: p@c) deals with the operating system(s) of art in the society. it is conceived as an online infobase and learning platform. the basic structure delivers a set of terms stemming from the roman circus (as a site created for the amusement of the plebs), each of which is set in parallel to one part of the system of contemporary art.
i.e., the "arena" is connected to the public aspects of the "[art] scene", the "spectacula" are set in parallel to "exhibitions and events", the "publicum" is of course the "public" and so on.

background information

"p@c" was started in 2000 to be part of a course/seminar held at the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts, now: "Universität der Künste") Berlin in the framework of the project "Kunst & Ökonomie". However, we then concentrated more on basic issues around this tension field, so we used the platform to raise and discuss these basic issues, but never found enough time to further enhance and fill the webpiece itself.

Nevertheless, as miss.gunst still considers the concept as worth to be realized – or at least the basic idea to be worth to think about certain parallels, the site has not been taken off the web so far. In the future there might come another opportunity to continue the work…
